From Kirkus Reviews , 12/01/92
a well-written overview of contemporary political,
social, and economic issues, as well as the history and geography of the Italian peninsula, usefully
organized around three themes--the role of history in shaping present-day Italy; the peoples of Italy,
past and present; and the regional diversity of modern Italy... [ ] ...The author's discussions of parliamentary democracy, women's rights, and church-state relations challenge outdated perceptions of Italy. In all, an admirably concise introduction to a vast subject."

"Extremely well written, Putnam's work takes the reader logically through the research process and into the conclusion..."
"This book was probably the smoothest and most interesting political science text I've read this year. Putnam ties democratic theories together clearly, making Italian regional government seem exciting."

"Great read on the most influential florentine family
an excellent read on the history of one of the most influential
contributing familes of italy. If you are going to Florence you should
read this book first. It tells many historic facts about castles,
fortresses, cathedrals and banks that are still standing in
Florence. You'll love Lorenzo the Magnificent for hiring the masters to
create art that is still alive in Florence due to the last Medici that
willed all that was Medici to Florence with the stipulation that it
stayed in Florence. This is why we can view paintings and statues by
Michaelangelo in florence that are 500 years old. This book also
contains history on some of the practices of the catholic church that
were very interesting."

Lessem begins with the day in 1991 when two hikers find a hairless figure they assume is an abandoned doll--until they notice the hole in the back of its skull. The discovery initiates an excavation and investigation that has resulted in unprecedented knowledge of life in Copper-Age Europe. The text, written in a lively style, describes the mummy and his possessions in great detail, as well as the scientific methods used to gather information. The artwork is a combination of photographs and crisp, full-color illustrations.

Forbidden Friendships : Homosexuality and Male Culture in Renaissance Florence
Our Price: $19.95
Los Angeles Times Sunday Book Review, George Armstrong
Much of this book's content is statistical but served up in often elegant, never ponderous, prose. At times, the reader may think that he or she has seen a particular slab of statistics scroll past the eyes more than once. But just when the reader fears drowning in stats, damn stats, Rocke tosses out a life preserver of witty comment to entice the reader to move on.

"The tiny town of Chewandswallow was very much like any other tiny town except for its weather which came three times a day, at breakfast, lunch and dinner. But it never rained rain and it never snowed snow and it never blew just wind. It rained things like soup and juice. It snowed things like mashed potatoes..."
