CARABINIERI SENIOR OFFICER AUTHORED A FIRE RAISING
DOSSIER
'Carabinieri union leader, Col. Pappalardo
circulates a dossier that hints at the possibility of overwhelming
the political order.
The dossier, dated
January 17, was made public Thursday 3rd March just when
Parliament passed a law making the Carabinieri an autonomous
body depending directly from the Ministry of Defense and
no longer from the Army.
The document raised havoc in the political and military
communities and Col. Pappalardo was asked to resign. At
first the Colonel refused stating that he had done nothing
wrong and had always done his duty, but on Friday evening
he announced his resignation from the union and said he
would sue the Ansa news agency which had published excerpts
of his dossier The Colonel's lawyer said the chosen extracts
had been 'manipulated'.
.
In the published extracts, Colonel Pappalarrdo suggests
that the Carabinieri should create a party and work to
change the Constitution so as to obtain more power.
Opposition accused Premier D'Alema of having maintained
privileged relations with the Colonel when drawing up
the Carabinieri law and the press accuses the government
of having known of the existence of the document before
it was published...
. Franco Frattini, center-right and president of Parliament's
Intelligence Service Committee said that if the government
had not been aware of the existence of this document it
must stop boasting of its efficiency.
Forza Italia leader Berlusconi said that " we are in
the middle of a mystification festival and that the fear
of losing the elections is going to the left-wing's head"
Two prosecutors, one military and the other civilian,
are now investigating into Colonel Pappalardo's conduct.
