REGIONAL ELECTION RESULTS
Center-left loses all the north and Lazio
I
he regional elections of Sunday April 16 awarded the center-right coalition 8 regions against 7 (the 5 special statute regions did not go to the polls); previously 5 regions were center-left and 6 center-right.
Center-left defeat was particularly heavy due to the loss of Lazio and the gap registered in Lombardy (60% against 30%). Moreover, Liguria and Piedmont passed under the leadership of a center-right regional president which means that all the Northern regions, unanimously considered the most developed in the country, as well as the most densely populated, are now under the center-right.
Center-left's only satisfaction was Antonio Bassolino's victory in Campania, which switched position entirely.
These regional elections are extremely important because they introduce a new electoral system into the regions: the direct election of the regional president independently from the election of the parties forming the regional council. In this way it is believed that regional presidents (now also called governors) will have a more important role than in the past.
The regions are also destined to obtain greater powers within a reform in the federalist sense of the Italian constitution, which now seems more likely.
Regions under the center-right: Piedmont, Liguria, Lombardy, Veneto, Lazio, Abruzzi, Calabria, and Puglia
Regions under the center-left: Emilia-Romagna, Marche, Tuscany, Umbria, Campania, Molise and Basilicata.
