EACH MINUTE AS MANY AS TWO CARS ARE STOLENThefts, however, are decreasingProfits from car thefts amount to 10 billion lire a year. Most stolen cars are sold in Marocco, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. In 1999 stolen cars amounted to 263, 664 with a decrease of 7.26% as regards the previous year. It is believed that the drop is due to the increase of electronics and the ever more complicated electric plants that require specialized equipment and a high degree of competency such as to discourage all those who are tempted to steal a car for personal use to move from one place to another. Cars that risk the most are the Mercedes S600, followed by the BMW, the Fiat Bravo and the Mercedes S500. The regions with the highest number of thefts are Lombardy and Lazio, whereas those with the lowest are Valle d'Aosta and Molise.
