SASSARI, PRISON GUARDS RELEASED

Three of the accused, however, will have to leave Sardinia.

On April 7 the Sassari Attorney General opened an investigation into the beating of inmates in the Sassari prison following the denunciation of relatives who, on April 21, organized a procession around the jail.

On May 3 82 prison guards and wardens were arrested, among whom prison director Di Marzio. The following day a prisoner left the jail and confirmed the beating.

This was followed by sit-in in front of the jail with cries of "free, free". During the interrogation guards and wardens rejected accusations.

On May 8 the prison doctor was investigated while the rage and the protests of wardens and unions rose threateningly as wardens felt they were being treated as criminals by justice authorities.

On May 12 a prosecutor ruled that the prison agents did not meet the requirements of pretrial detention and saw no risk of flight.

He said that this was not to be considered a step back, but simply the result of the fact that evidence could no longer be fouled.

In fact, the accusation remains and in the last days has been confirmed on several occasions, in particular as regards the role played by prison director Di Marzio.

In fact, not all guards are free in the same manner. Three of them are suspended from their job and will have to leave Sardinia. The other agents will be appointed to other prisons where they will not meet the same prisoners as before.

The release of guards curbed tensions between prison guards and the government.

Justice authorities said they intend investigating thoroughly into prison structures and correcting whatever situation might cause disturbance or inconveniences.
