STRIKES

A new wave of strikes scheduled for next week

Many local strikes caught travellers by surprise last week.

In fact, as many as 30 transportation strikes, from bus and train drivers, to highway toll, harbor and airport workers created havoc for millions of commuters and travellers throughout the country.

However, the national train strike which had been scheduled for last week was postponed to 10 and 11 June, though local transportation workers protested against the terms of the renewal of their contract and against a new law designed to limit the inconveniences travelers have to face during strikes.

The law, passed by the Senate on April 5, provides for a ten-day notice for all strikes and requires transportation workers to guarantee at least 50% of service.

As things stand now, a regular train service will be guaranteed throughout this week except for the Naples "Circumvesuviana" workers who will strike on Thursday 18.

Highway toll workers have scheduled a strike for Sunday 21, bus drivers of Messina will strike on Thursday 25, trains leaving Florence and Naples will stop on the evening of the 26 to the evening of the 27 and station personnel in Florence will strike on Sunday 28.

On Monday 29 ground personnel of the Linate and Malpensa Milan airports are due to strike from 5:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. of the 30th.
