ROME READY FOR THE GREAT JUBILEE
Renewal work on the station to be ready for the year 2000
During a visit to the modernisation site in Rome's Termini station, Transport Minister Treu said that work is proceeding as planned, and that everything will be ready for the Holy Year which starts in December 1999.
The work begun in Rome is part of a modernisation plan in Italy's main railroad stations for the Great Jubilee in the year 2000.
The Holy Year is expected to double the number of railroad travelers, and consequently the users of Italy's stations.
The Grandi Stazioni Company is responsible for the project, which covers 13 stations.
Work is expected to commence shortly on Milan and Venice stations, and thereafter Naples.
The Transport Minister said "Rome station will be at European level. That is to say modern, friendly, and able to pay its way, because the contracts which have signed for the new areas are beginning to give their first fruits."
