EVERYONE AN ORGAN DONOR
Parliament passes opt-out law on organ donation
If the Bill currently being debated in the Senate becomes law, organ donation is set to change in Italy.
Every Italian citizen over 18 years of age must now decide whether or not to donate organs if they should die. Unless you opt out, you are assumed as agreeing to donate. It is what has come to be known as silent consent.
Silent consent, however, must also be informed, which means that anyone who doesn't opt out must be shown to have known about the new law.
It is hoped the new law will go some way towards making up for the grave shortage in organs for donation.
Statistics show that Northern Italy is in fourth place on a Europe-wide scale, whereas the South is way behind.
