ITALY NOMINATES ROMANO PRODI FOR EUROPRESIDENT
Prime Minister makes official announcement in Madrid
In a joint press conference with Spanish Premier José Maria Aznar, Massimo D'Alema announced on Tuesday 23rd Feb. that Italy intends to nominate Romano Prodi for the European Commission presidency.
The unwritten rule of rotating the presidency around the greater and smaller states and the political Left and Right means Signor Prodi stands a pretty good chance of winning. The fact that Spain is not nominating anyone will help him.
Germany still has to decide, and may surprise everyone if, as expected, they nominate Javier Solana from Spain. Señor Solana is currently NATO Secretary General, and Germany is thought to want to nominate a German for that post.
