CONSTITUTIONAL CHANGES IN FAVOR OF WOMEN
Government proposes changes to Constitution to help women
On the day after March 8th, international women's day, the Italian Government decided to propose a law which would change the Constitution in favor of women in politics.
The Constitution will not merely guarantee equality for all, but will bring in positive discrimination to make sure women play a greater role.
A new Act, passed a couple of years ago, which stipulated a quorum of women in electoral lists, was abolished by the Constitutional Court. The proposed modifications to Article 3 of the Constitution open the door to a new law.
Women in the Italian Parlament make up only 10% of members, and in the last few days comparisons have been made with Sweden, which has a 40% membership.
