10,000 REFUGES IN ITALY

Government decides on airlift

The Italian Government decided, Tuesday May 4th, to take in 10,000 Kosovar refugees.

The decision was taken to answer the urgent requests made by the government of Macedonia and the UNHCR.

Five thousand are to go to the former NATO base at Comiso in Sicily. They are to be airlifted out of Albania, 830 people a day.

The same transport planes are to be used to transport a field hospital and eight kitchens to Macedonia, as well as other equipment necessary during the emergency.

Until now, most Italian aid efforts were directed at Albania, where Italian volunteers were the first to set up refugee camps.
